Poland approves dig for hidden Nazi bunker hiding legendary Amber Room

Readers of Covenant of the Iron Cross will recall the infamous Nazi Gold Train featured in the book, and its rumored possession of Empress of Russia Catherine the Great’s fabled Amber Room. Well, it seems news has broken that it may have been found—in the actual vicinity of where it’s identified in the novel.

A group of treasure hunters has received official permission to begin excavations at a former SS military site in Poland’s northern Kaszuby region, where they suspect a hidden Nazi bunker may contain German loot — possibly including the legendary Amber Room.

The search, led by engineer and amateur historian Jan Delingowski, follows a decade-long private investigation. He believes the treasures were transported from Königsberg (now the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad) near the end of the war and hidden in a camouflaged shelter close to a lake near Brusy, once part of a restricted SS zone.
